Why nostalgia, you might ask? Does that mean I like to live in the past? Well, no. Life in the present is very much an adventure and I have learned the blessing of being content in the here and now. The nostalgia comes in as a recognition and appreciation of the good things in my life and the memories I attach to objects that have stood the test of time. There are most certainly chapters in my life that I would never want to repeat, and I would not wish those days on my worst enemy! Yet, from those hard times I learned valuable life lessons that have had the effect of being thankful for what I do have now, especially in the area of relationships. I am, indeed, blessed beyond measure.

Nostalgia helps me appreciate a wonderful fact, and that is that a good parent’s or grandparent’s influence extends well beyond their lifetimes. There is something so wonderful and valuable about life experience that expands my appreciation for my early days and the belief in me that my parents demonstrated. When I paint nostalgic images, it helps me remember and honor my parents and grandmother, and their commitment to their children. Now I get to pass on that blessing in the art that I create. Perhaps that same nostalgia will resonate with others with similar thoughts and make their heart smile. With nostalgia we are connected to a common experience of the past and can share the memories.
